2007 Autumn Show
As the wet summer of 2007 drew to a close our third flower show of the year took place on the 1st September. The standard of entries in all classes was high despite the recent bad weather which did reduce the overall number of entries. Our nominated class of “A Spud in a Tub” was a resounding success. There were 24 entries which must be a record number of entries for a nominated class. It goes to show that gardening can be fun! The winner was Joan Simms whose potatoes weighed in at 13lb 1oz - a great effort! Can you beat this next year?
The Floral Art Group put on a superb exhibition of floral displays that showed off the wide range of talents of its members without the constraints of judges’ rules. We were also delighted to be able to give the children an activity of their own which was planting up a spider plant and decorating a planter, each of which was shaped as a Beatrice Potter character. All the children really enjoyed themselves and our thanks go to Elaine Marshall for setting up and running this creative activity.
Despite the bad weather our plant stall was still laden with plants. At the shows you can certainly pick up some beautiful plants at a fraction of the price in the shops!
We also again had the pleasure of the company of the Mayor (Councillor Jean Steer) who presented the cups and medals to all our winners and was presented with flowers Madeline and Cecily Knee.
Congratulations to all winners. Tony Field won the Autumn Show Challenge Cup, the Dahlia Cup and also the National Dahlia Society Bronze Medal and the National Dahlia Society Silver Medal went to John Hardy. The Early Flowering Chrysanthemum cup was won by Dennis Cooper. Gordon Norris got the highest points for vegetables and won the Jim Fuller cup whilst Mary Wood was awarded the National Vegetable Society Medal for the best Vegetable exhibit. Mary also won the Ladies Summer Show Challenge Cup. Finally Joan Simms won the Chairman’s cup for the nominated class.
