2007 LATE AUTUMN SHOW

The last show of the year is often the smallest and quietest of the four shows the Ewell Horticultural Association stage each year but on Saturday 20th October there was a real buzz at Blenheim High School in Epsom at the EHA Late Autumn Show; the number of entries and attendance was higher than in previous years and despite the first frosts of Autumn the previous week there were many dazzling Dahlias joining the colourful display that included Chrysanthemums, vegetables and fruit.  Some fantastic arrangements from the Floral Art group were among other attractions that included our popular teas and cakes, sales of bulbs, plants, garden tools and also Christmas cards and other items that were sold on behalf of Perennial the Gardeners Benevolent Association.

The EHA were particularly pleased to welcome Lawrence Fanutza-Davis and his family from Islington to the show.  Lawrence’s mum Paola had contacted the EHA when she was searching for a show where keen vegetable grower Lawrence aged 12 could exhibit his giant pumpkin.  The pumpkin arrived safely from North London on the morning of the show and Lawrence was pleased to be awarded a second prize and hopes to be back next year with an even bigger specimen!

We also again had the pleasure of the company of the Mayor (Councillor Jean Steer) who presented the cups and medals to all our winners.  Annual trophies, based on points accumulated from all 4 shows, were also awarded at the end of the show and top prize winners walking away with more than one award included Mary Wood (the Banksian Medal winner), Dennis Cooper and also Sue Woodward who had lots of success in 2007 in the Domestic and Handicraft classes.  Her son Toby Woodward seems to be following in her footsteps and was awarded both the W. Maydon Junior Challenge cup and the 7-13 trophy.  Winners of Floral Art annual trophies included Sheila Stracy (Floral Art Cup), Maureen Hanlan, Pam Norris and Frances Melvin.

The Mayor was presented with flowers by keen gardener Michael Overy (aged 11) who earlier in the year won a trophy for his prize winning Daffodils and at this show demonstrated his cookery skills by winning a first prize for his Toffee Apple Turnovers.

The next EHA Show is the Spring Show on the 29th March 2008 at Blenheim High School.
