2008 Talks ProgrammeAll talks are held at Bourne Hall, Ewell at 8.00pm. Entrance for members is £2.00.
Designing your Garden - Pat Verall Those of you who are regular attendees will remember Pat from a previous visit. This talk should appeal to those who are currently re-designing their garden or those of us that need some inspiration. At the end of the day the basic principles of garden design remain the same whatever the project. Keeping Britain's Woodlands Alive - John Martin The Woodland Trust campaigns to protect ancient woods, improve woodland biodiversity, increase native woodland cover and increase our understanding and enjoyment of the woods. John Martin will explain how the workings of the Woodlands Trust are so important to the biodiversity of our native species and how the thoughts on planting indigenous broad leafed trees has changed in recent years. EHA Annual General Meeting followed by a talk on "A Passion for Trees" - Liz Ramsay (AGM from 7.30, Talk at 8.00) Liz Ramsay has been a garden designer for some 20 years, and has wide professional knowledge and experience of trees in the garden and in the landscape. But she has a huge personal interest too in these life-giving giants of the natural world. The starting point for her talk is the fascination that trees can inspire: from huge ancient trees to the different habitats that trees help create. There are practical thoughts on good garden trees and a look at the national Tree Warden Network and the projects local Tree Wardens undertake. Liz is the Tree Warden co-ordinator for her local parish. All this and more in…A Passion for Trees Wildlife Gardening - John Clachan John is our regular and very popular speaker who will give us an insight into how to create a garden that will benefit our wildlife. Organic Gardening Basic Principles - Paul Templeton The environment and biodiversity of our soil is an important consideration when we maintain our garden. But what is Organic Gardening? My Life as a Shepherdess - Chloe Dancey Chloe Dancey has been a Shepherdess at Loseley for the past 40 years. As part of her talk she will bring along tools of the trade dating back to 18th century and will give us an insight into the life and times of a Shepherdess. Patterns in Plants - Dr Peter Brandham Dr Peter Brandham retired in October 1997 as Head of the Cytogenetics of the Jodrell laboratory at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and he remains in the laboratory as a voluntary researcher on plant chromosomes. During a career of more than 40 years there, he has developed a great love for and knowledge of one of the world’s finest botanic gardens and has built up a wealth of experience in photography, both plants and animals. Taking every opportunity to explore the gardens and photograph the more interesting examples of the over 38,000 plant species grown there, he has accumulated an almost unrivalled collection of photographs. Unusual and thought-provoking ways in which an experienced botanical photographer records images of plants and flower subjects, showing a wide range of features and shapes that others often miss. This programme is devoted entirely to principles of photograph composition and the appreciation of the beauty and aesthetics of botanical material. Totally Latin free! If you have ideas for subjects for the Talks please let us know. talks@ewellhortassn.co.uk |
