Please note that single places are strictly limited and even if you are on the preliminary list you will need to book early. Accommodation: three nights’ bed, breakfast and dinner at the four-star Marriott Peterborough. En suite rooms with air conditioning and tea/coffee facilities. Swimming pool.
Day 1, Friday: Travel from three local pick-up points. Visit to Audley End, Saffron Walden (English Heritage). Includes a 19th century parterre and organic walled kitchen garden. Free to EH members. Option of touring the house. Lunches available. Day 2, Saturday: Cambridge. You are free to visit the 40 acre Cambridge University Botanic Gardens, tour the colleges, enjoy a riverside walk or go shopping. The choice is yours. Day 3, Sunday: Visits to two gardens. Morning: Barnsdale Gardens, Rutland. Geoff Hamilton's famous garden which has 37 individual small gardens in eight acres and a nursery with over 2,000 varieties. Lunches available. Afternoon: Hill House, near Leicester. A private visit to this small garden, where the emphasis is on architectural plants and unusual and tender perennials.
Day 4 Monday: Return home, with a visit to Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. A Jacobean house belonging to the Cecils has gardens dating from early 17th century, with plants collected by Tradescant. Free entrance for RHS members. Lunches available. Day trips Please contact Brenda for availability, fill in slip and send with SAE for each trip and total payment to Brenda. Friday, 28 March. Morning: McBean's Orchids near Lewes. Guided tour of nursery and entry to Exotic Growing Houses. Afternoon: High Beeches Woodland & Water Gardens, Handcross. Daffodils, camellias and magnolias in bloom at this time. Lunches must be pre-ordered here but there is an outside picnic area if you wish to bring your own. Wednesday, 7 May. Morning: Waddesdon Manor (NT), near Aylesbury. One of the finest Victorian gardens in Britain, famous for parterre and seasonal displays. Lunches available. Afternoon: Chenies Manor, Bucks. Masses of tulips at this time of year. Also a yew maze, orchard and kitchen garden. Option to tour house. Sunday, 10 August. Morning: Broadview Gardens, Hadlow, Kent. Themed demonstration gardens designed and constructed by Hadlow College students. Limited facilities for lunch but there are good pubs within walking distance. Afternoon: Downderry Nursery specialising in lavender and rosemary and The Old Walled Garden, a nursery specialising in rare and unusual plants, both near Hadlow. |
