2009 Autumn ShowDahlias and chrysanthemums shine at Autumn Show Once again, the show benches were a kaleidoscope of colour at the Autumn Show on 5 September. Dahlias, from giant size to tiny pom-poms, and chrysanthemums from large to petite, provided a rainbow of colours and a feast for the eye. Unfortunately, the majority of these exhibits were produced by just two of our members, Tony Field and Dennis Cooper, who respectively won most of the dahlia and chrysanthemum classes. They really need some more challengers next year. The produce classes amply displayed the talents of our members in cultivating high quality fruit and vegetables, despite a relatively disappointing summer. Particularly outstanding were the superb potatoes and onions of Gordon Norris, and the variety of different tomatoes from the garden of Jenny Booth. Tricia Goodwin’s imaginative display of over 14 kinds of flowers, vegetables and fruit in a trug won Class 59 and Chris Greenwood won the prize for the best fruit exhibit of three conference pears. There was an encouragingly large number of entries for the Spud in a Tub class. The winner was John Loader, who managed to produce 6 lb 8oz of potatoes to gain the Chairman’s Cup. See below for other awards. Many thanks, as always, to the Committee Members who worked so hard behind the scenes, and to all the volunteers who made cakes, ran stalls and raffles, and organised the refreshments all afternoon. The show would not be a success without you. |
