2009 Summer Show

Flowers and produce at their best for Summer Show

Luckily for us, our Summer Show took place before the most intense heatwave we have had for several years, so our flowers and produce were at their best. Inside the hall, the show benches were dominated by tall delphiniums and some huge pelargoniums, one of which was judged Best Exhibit in Show. Yasha Gursoy swept the board in the Rose Classes, but Josephine Thomas sneaked the Best in Show rose prize from under his nose, with her bloom in Class 17. Joan Simms distinguished herself by winning three firsts in the sweet pea section, while the Vegetable and Fruit Classes were full of early produce, including succulent strawberries and raspberries. A Golden theme dominated the Floral Art benches, where Sheila Stracy deservedly gained Best in Show for her Golden Moments exhibit. Sadly, there were very few entries in the Junior section, although Madeleine Simms set a high standard with her miniature garden. This was exceptionally well thought out and presented, as was her Favourite Sandwich, in the Domestic Section. Come on kids; why not challenge Madeleine next time? As always, a highlight for visitors was the range of delicious cakes and drinks produced by the hard-working catering staff, and all the cake makers. The Plant Stall was exceptionally well stocked by voluntary donations of home grown plants, and provided some real bargains. A big thankyou to all the organisers and helpers at the Show.
