2009 Trips
Morning:. The Living Rainforest in Berkshire. A huge glasshouse crammed with tropical plants, also free-flying birds and butterflies. Lunches available here (usually baguettes) but must be pre-ordered, to give them an idea of the numbers required.. Afternoon: Foxgrove Plants. A small family-run nursery specialising in snowdrops, penstemons and grasses. Courson plant festival and gardens of Normandy 5 days, 4 nights from Thursday 14th May to Monday 18th May. £393 per person (plus £80 single supplement). Insurance is compulsory for this trip. You may take out your own or arrange it through Palmers (the cost is £24 if paid by 31 December, after that you will need to contact me as the cost is not yet known).£60 deposit per person payable by 25 January 2009, balance by 10 March 2009. Entrance to all gardens and Courson will be around £40 payable with the balance. Please contact Brenda to check availability or if you have any queries and then fill in the booking slip and return with a cheque for your deposit and insurance if required made payable to Ewell Horticultural Association with a large SAE to Brenda Allen. Accommodation: 4 nights bed, breakfast and dinner at the Mercure Val de Reuil near Rouen. En suite rooms. Outdoor swimming pool and tennis court. Day 1 Thursday: Travel from 3 local pick-up points. Ferry crossing Dover to Calais. Lunch en route to hotel.
The Journées des Plantes at Courson is the best-known and most prestigious of plant festivals in France, renowned for both diversity and quality. We will have a leisurely start with lunch on the way. Day 3 Saturday: Visits to 2 gardens Morning: Le Jardin Plume. A garden & nursery, created in an old cider orchard in the last 10 years by Patrick & Sylvie Quibel. Massed grasses & perennials are contrasted with finely mown lawn, pools and hedging. Afternoon: Le Clos du Coudray. A series of themed gardens including a rose garden underplanted with perennials, a shady garden with some fabulous hostas, a beautiful French style potager with box borders and winding grassy paths. Garden centre.
Day 4 Sunday Morning: Jardins de Castillon Plantbessin. A magnificent series of "rooms" filled with charm and serenity: ornamental lakes, Japanese English and herb gardens, all featuring a great variety of plants. Lunch in Bayeux. Afternoon: Jardins du Chateau de Brecy. A 17c chateau with a meticulously restored, richly ornamented Italian style garden laid out over four terraces. Day 4 Monday Morning: Agapanthe. A private visit to this one and a half acre secret garden with winding paths and lush vegetation, filled with unusual garden antiques and architectural salvage. Return home with lunch en route to ferry.
Morning: Mount Ephraim near Faversham, Kent. A very tranquil garden with topiary, rose garden, lake, water and rock gardens. Ploughman's lunches available, but must be pre-ordered. Afternoon: Doddington Place. 10 acres featuring a large Edwardian rock garden with pools, a sunken garden and extensive woodland garden. Morning: West Dean , Sussex. The gardens surrounding this well-known college feature a sunken garden, Edwardian pergola, 16 Victorian greenhouses with a great variety of plants and much more. Lunches available. Also picnic tables if you wish to bring your own. Afternoon: Denmans, Garden designed by John Brookes, planted for all year round interest. Extensive use of gravel and grasses. |
