2011 Summer Show
Despite the vaguaries of the weather in the last few months, our
members managed to produce some stunning displays for the Summer
Show on June 18th. Probably because of the recent weather; (hot and
dry during May followed by torrential rain in June), there weren’t
many sweet peas this year, but the free-flowering pelargoniums
definitely made up for this. Sandra Parratt’s, in particular,
had a vast number of flowers on it, and was judged the Best exhibit
in Show, while Gordon Norris won the Vernon Cup. Other plants of
note were the beautiful fuchsias and begonias.
It was a pity that Yash Gursoy had so little competition in the rose
classes; don’t forget there are some more opportunities to challenge
him at the September show!.
Some very impressive lettuces were shown in the Nominated class, won
by Mark Thompson. Soft fruit was in abundance, including
loganberries, currants and gooseberries, and members also produced
early peas and broad beans.
The Floral Art competitions centred around the theme of a Church
Festival. Joan Pryke attracted the Judge’s Choice for her
exhibit on “We Plough the Fields and Scatter”, and the kneelers by
June Sparkes and Diana Carpenter were just outstandingly clever.
Visitors were also lucky to get the chance to buy honey from our
local beekeeper, David Pryce, and have the pick of some bargain
plants on the plant stall.
It is said after every show, but where would we be without the
enticing cakes and teas? Many thanks to all those who work
hard in the kitchen to produce the refreshments, and many thanks to
everyone behind the scenes who helped in different ways to make the
show a great success.
