2011 Late Autumn Show

The last show of the year took place on a lovely sunny day, and attracted the usual crowds of visitors to admire the exhibits.  Foremost on the benches were the chrysanthemums and dahlias which seemed to be larger and more perfect than ever.   Although there was less produce than at the Autumn Show, there were some beautiful apples and many unusual vegetables.  The “Spud in a Tub” class was won by Joan Sims – the Sims family seem to be monopolising this competition as both Joan’s daughter and her son have won this in the past! Some amazing cacti and pot plants shared the space with annual and perennial flowers, and there were a good number of entries in the Domestic classes.

The Floral Art Group displayed an exhibition of their skills, amongst which was a very clever exhibit, “I saw Three Ships”, by Mary Batty.  In addition, this was an opportunity to see Barbara Meineck and Sheila Stracy’s prize winning entries from the recent Wisley Flower Show, where they were up against Floral Art Groups from all over Surrey.

The handicraft classes produced some fine drawings, paintings and needlework, in particular Mary Batty’s perpetual advent calendar, which was exquisite.  The photography section seems to be going from strength to strength, producing delightful interpretations on the theme of “Autumn Colour”, “Stepping Stones”, and “Through the Garden Gate” – Lynne Mason’s wistful dog peering out from his garden being the favourite!

When it came to prizes, two new members were extremely successful at their first attempts.  Chris Golding won the R.W. Walton Chrysanthemum Cup, the Late Autumn Challenge Cup and the National Chrysanthemum Society Bronze Medal.  Jane Hoddy, meanwhile, carried off the Horace Bourne Memorial Trophy, the Seymour Salver, the Cacti Shield and the Kay Marrable Cup.  A full list of prize winners is set out below, but a special mention must be made of Jazmin Ramsbotham and Nathaniel Smithers, who won the junior trophies between them.  We need more junior exhibitors to take the EHA into the future!
